Watch: Official Homeland Season 2 Trailer

Homeland is one of those shows that was just so good, and so complex right off that bat that we were almost left wondering when it would falter, it really doesn’t. After pulling off season one flawlessly, this full length trailer for the second season is another piece of beautiful, powerful piece of media.

The trailer is set to a slow, haunting version of “Every Breath You Take” by The Police performed by Scala & Kolacny Brothers. The creepy anthem about an obsessive stalker fits Homeland’s themes to a tee that it might as well have been Carrie Mathison’s theme-song and mantra in season one. It captures the feeling of omnipresent surveillance that is so much a part of the lives of Carrie, Saul, and Brody.  Each shot from the trailer gives the impression that the subjects are under surveillance. It feels claustrophobic, intense and exciting.

What Homeland has done brilliantly is tap into the very personal space that the characters inhabit. It is intrusive to the point where we sometimes feel squeamish about what we see on screen. The loneliness, conflict and pain suffered by Nicholas and Jessica Brody, Carrie  and Saul is palpable. “Homeland” explores all these very private, painful spaces, it lingers in the isolation and the uncertainty. The trick here is that none of this feels melodramatic, it is excruciatingly real, each character feels as though there is probably a real life counterpart out there with very really problems, pain and exceptionally difficult burdens to bear.

This is all accomplished by exceptional writing and performances by Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin, Mandy Patinkin. It takes the big fear about about terrorism and the post 9/11 world and boils it down to individual stories.

I think this new Homeland trailer captures everything that was perfect about season one and gives a very exciting, promising peek into what is coming in season 2. What do you think?

Homeland returns on Showtime September 30th at 10pm.
