On the occasion of International Women’s Day (March 8), I decided to take the time and think about who my favourite female sci-fi character might be. Sci-fi is a wonderful genre, it’s a place where anything can be made possible, and there are many opportunities for strong, independent and otherwise completely awesome female characters to shine.
Today I decided to talk about Kaywinnit Lee Frye, also known as Kaylee, the sweet ship mechanic from Firefly played by Jewel Staite. Today I chose Kaylee because I thought she might not be the obvious choice. She is not a gender bending reincarnate like Kara Thrace, she isn’t a soldier or warrior like her shipmate Zoe, or the girl who saves the world (… a lot) like Buffy. Kaylee Frye is one of the most well rounded female characters in sci-fi, or more broadly, on television. Read more…

If you haven’t been paying attention, which I highly doubt, G33KPRON is hosting the official Toronto ComiCON Kick-Off Party this Friday March 9th, 2012 at Tattoo Rock Parlour featuring a few amazing special guests!!! Among these guests is Toronto based artist/illustrator Bowman, who I was lucky to squeeze in an exclusive interview with a mere few days before the big event! You may have already seen his work on album covers, band posters, t-shirts, or maybe even in the artist alley at last year’s FanExpo. Bright, bold and often tongue-in-cheek, Bowman’s work is as captivating as he is. Read more…

How much do I love these guys? Stunt crew Thousand Pounds have finally released their short film “The Devil Gene – The Satsui no hadou” and it is AWESOME.
Like I said before, Hollywood really has no excuse these days for producing crap fighting movies when there’s so much talent like these guys around.
Thousand Pounds are already known for their Arkham City Catwoman fight, Naruto Shippuden short film and more. Capcom took notice of their videos and recently got the crew to do a Street Fighter X Tekken video in anticipation of the game. The result is this.
When the renowned world warrior Ryu, (from Street Fighter lore) begins to struggle with the darkness inside (The “Satsui no hadou”) it attracts the attention of a man who has come to fully accept his own darkness, Kazuya Mishima (Tekken series regular). With the Devil Gene howling inside Ryu’s mind, Kazuya attacks, catching him off guard and taking advantage of his battle within. Who will win when these worlds collide?
Video below. How awesome is this? I can’t wait for the game! Read more…
Today in, shit I’d like to buy news, Kurt Cobain’s old van is up for sale on eBay. The 1972 Dodge Sportsman Royal van, better known as “MELVAN” was used to chauffeur heavy rock band Melvins while on tour. It is also claimed to have been driven to Seattle punk shows by Nirvana frontman Cobain, and features his artwork of the band KISS on the side. How’s that for cool? Who cares that you could be bidding on a $30 000 shitbox that doesn’t drive? Quick, someone alert Courtney. Read more…
As a kid robot I’ve always wanted to make these kinds of creepy mashup dolls using all my brothers and sisters dolls and action figures. I never did get around to doing it but seeing it on Toy Story reminded me of how awesome it would be, until I saw this.
This is just creepy – in a good way. I’d definitely hang these around G33K HQ only to end up waking up each night in fear-induced cold sweats.
You can order these and many others like this over at Geeky Vixen’s Etsy store.
Check them out below. Read more…
Keeping with their theme of spoofing popular movie trailers, The Muppets take on The Hunger Games in their latest minute long spot for their DVD/Blu-Ray release. Trailers for the theatrical release spoofed hits including Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Green Lantern, The Muppets would be remiss to pass up on the opportunity to parody the movie with the biggest promotional push so far in 2012.
The trailer, entitled “Feel The Hunger”, mimics the burning Mockingjay logo replacing it with an encircled Muppets “M” gone up in flames. The music and style of the trailer is similar to that of The Hunger Games but luckily we don’t have to see our favourite Muppets pitted against each other in a battle to the death. That might be another movie for another time.
Watch the trailer below, and may the odds be ever in your favour Read more…

I finally went to see Chronicle in theaters and I can honestly say I thought it was pretty good, a bit depressing, actually…but still good.
The plot follows Andrew (Dane DeHaan), a lonely, socially awkward, abused and depressed teenager. His only companion, his cousin Matt (Alex Russell) who feels obligated to hang around him. One night, Matt drags Andrew out to a typical high school party. Andrew, feeling uncomfortable, leaves the party to go sit outside alone to wait for Matt. Read more…
