Over the weekend I attended one of the biggest gaming conventions in North America, The Penny Arcade Expo aka PAX East.

So what exactly is PAX?

PAX is for the fans. It’s a place where the biggest gaming developers give you a chance to get your hands on the industry’s most anticipated titles before anyone else and you would not believe what people are willing to do for the privilege. Shaved heads, real tattoos, and dance competitions are just a few of the hoops I witnessed people jumping through for free games, beta keys, special in-game items, and SWAG!

With Spring in the air the records on my player get poppier and Dany Laj & The Looks are pop, straight up. Laj, whose sound conjures up early Elvis Costello, left his small mining community in Northern Ontario for the big city lights (picking up a couple band members on the way) where he struck musical gold. Dany’s (rare and limited) EP, ‘The Match’ is nothing short of power-pop goodness so keep reading to give it a listen.

Dear People of PAX East (that includes you, Jerry and Mike),

It was a pleasant day in New England and the convention attendees were flocking towards PAX East with excitement. Thousands of dressed up cosplayers put on their “Sunday Best” to get ready for the millions of photos that would inevitably be snapped of them that day. But one cosplayer, Jessica Nigri, experienced some difficulties. She was excited to be portraying Juliet from the upcoming game, Lollipop Chainsaw, because she was a gamer herself. Instead of being met with enthusiasm, apparently PAX received “many” complaints about her “inappropriate” cosplay, despite it being an accurate representation of the character. She wasn’t a booth babe, she was an excited geek who got to cosplay and work a booth she loved! So what gave?!

I understand how difficult it can be to be a constantly-aroused heterosexual man or adolescent, and how it can be even more frustrating to be a mother of a sexually aroused teenage boy attending a gaming convention. I mean, breasts are so obscene! Women’s bodies – gross! Women should cover themselves up more, because at “family events” like Penny Arcade Expo 2012, we don’t like seeing such un-Christian things like, heaven forbid, cleavage and abs! I mean, look, Penny Arcade is an incredibly family-friendly website and organisation, right?

Warning! This is most danger movie. To avoid fainting repeat – it’s only a movie, it’s only a movie, it’s only a movie!

The voice-over alone makes this probably the best movie I’ll ever see. I say that now without even seeing it, but then again, what do you expect from Noboru Iguchi, creator of Machine Girl and Robo Geisha – two classics that I hold dear to my lil robo heart.

Surprisingly the reviews for this movie are actually not too bad considering the stupidly grotesqueawesome subject matter.

I mean hell, this entire movie reminds me of our family dinner conversations (I fully endorse toilet humour in my house).

Even their website is full of shitawesome. Check it out here (it’s in Japanese).

airbender star wars mashup

Ok now I’ve seen the epitome of awesome – Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Wars mashup art! This would only make the best cartoon series ever made in existence ever. C’mon, you know I’m right.

The ONLY thing I don’t like about this pic the JarJar as Momo (JarJar wasn’t a main character in New Hope and on). I’m thinking he could have made him as R2 or C3P0 instead since that was Aang’s little buddy (like Luke and R2). Ok, that’s the uber-nerd in me talking now.

This cool mashup comes from David Filoni whom you may know as one of the artists from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

When I left Avatar the Last Airbender I gave every member of the crew this image of the main cast as Star Wars Characters. Working on Avatar was one of the greatest experiences of my career and I have never printed a copy of it since I gave it to the crew of Season 1. I drew the image on paper and then had it scanned in. The color was done by my then-assistant director Justin Ridge, who later came up and worked with me on Clone Wars.

“Pillows & Blankets” is the second part of the Community: Fort Wars epic, check out my 5 awesome things from  Digital Exploration of Interior Design’ “Pillows & Blankets” was particularly difficult for me to break down into “5 Awesome Things” because there were so many tiny details that really made this episode so successful. It was really the overall style and composition of the episode that was the star and will take top spot. Read more…

How was day two of PAX? Pretty goddamn glorious. Break dancing zombies, incredibly detailed costumes, and epic giveaways made Saturday the best day so far.

I was able to get the jump on a few of the games before the show opened and thank god I did because the lines are enormous!

The first game I got my hands on was Lollipop Chainsaw. I had no idea what to expect and to be honest, my initial reaction to the trailer was a resounding “UGH!” but, I wanted to give it shot. Of all the games I played yesterday, Lollipop Chainsaw was hands down the most fun which was pleasantly surprising! Read more…
